Environment Centre, Pier Street, Swansea

The conversion of Swansea's first telephone exchange to the Environment Centre was followed by this extension, opened in 2001. The centre includes a fair trade cafe, information point, library, internet access and meeting room.

Designed as a demonstration building to portray energy-saving features such as solar chimney, turf roofs and solar extract fans/water heating, the building hosts a number of artworks.

A series of green oak posts, bound with sisal rope, support a complex series of timber trusses with tie bars.
