Tower of the Ecliptic, Swansea Maritime Quarter

The building contains an astronomical observatory, equipped with a 20 inch Shafer-Maksutov telescope, exhibition space, office/library, darkroom and viewing gallery. Built by Swansea City Council, the complex is now operated by Swansea Astronomical Society.

The circular access tower with a 76 step spiral stair is topped with an oculus, glazed with dichroic glass by David Pearl which casts an increasingly intense violet light as one ascends the stairs to the telescope. A series of panels at ground floor level by Nigel Jenkins relate to light and the cosmos.
